SADEV glass balustrades come to your home!
According to a survey by INPES (the French national institute for health prevention and education) published in March 2014, 49% of accidental falls by children take place even though the opening had protection. This research was carried out on a panel of 76 children (aged between 13 months and 14 years) on falls from great heights; 62 were aged under 6.
In 52% of cases, a piece of furniture was located under the opening or was moved by the child (bed, chair, table, toy), 11 children (31%) climbed over the guardrail or the opening itself, and 6 children (17%) leaned over.
This study raises the issue of the safety and protection of railings in homes, but also in public buildings.
Glass railings are a solution that considerably reduces the risk of falls, since the glass used is specially treated for strength and resistance.
The glass
Glass railings offer an undeniable aesthetic advantage. However, in many cases, this installation is intended to secure spaces. Depending on the application, different types of glass are available:
- Laminated glass: this consists of 2 sheets of glass joined together with an interlayer the middle. This solution is highly resistant to impact and has the particularity of not shattering into several pieces in the event of breakage.
- Tempered glass (also called toughened glass) : glass undergoes a thermal or chemical tempering process to make it more resistant than ordinary glass. In the event of impact, it will break into several small fragments.
- Tempered laminated glass: this system ensures maximum safety. The glass is composed of two tempered sheets embedded in several films of ethylene vinyl acetate. This high level of strength enables the glass to be used on large panels.
SADEV usually works with glass tempering companies to ensure the quality of the system.
To prevent the interlayers from becoming damp over time, SADEV also offers to add handrails above the installed guardrail.
Wich applications?
A glass railing is an elegant, modern option that can be used in many contexts, both for functional and aesthetic reasons and for safety. Here are some common uses for glass railings:
- Commercial and office areas: in commercial and office buildings, glass balustrades can help create a sense of space and modernity, while subtly dividing spaces.
- Balconies and terraces: glass railings offer security and protection without compromising panoramic views as would more opaque materials.
- Staircases: the use of glass railings on staircases helps to create a feeling of open space and fluidity. This can make a space brighter and more welcoming, while providing the necessary safety along the staircase.
- Swimming pools: around swimming pools, glass guardrails are used for safety reasons, allowing complete visual surveillance of the aquatic space, which is particularly useful if children are present. At SADEV, the SWMSIDE range has been designed for the application of guardrails around swimming pools.
- Stadiums: at SADEV, we guarantee glass retention on high-performance projects such as stadiums. This means you can enjoy sporting events in complete safety. Our guardrails are tested up to 10KN ULS (Ultimate Limit State) performance, guaranteeing high resistance and compliance with local safety standards. Our glass guardrails are guaranteed by technical approval (n°2.1/22-189 _V1 and 2.1/15-1673_V5).
The aesthetic benefits
The main advantage of SADEV glass railings is their transparency. The impression of extra space, the feeling of openness to the outside are all possible thanks to this material.
For indoor applications, glass creates a warm, luminous atmosphere.
For exterior applications, it helps to secure the building without losing sight of it.
Maintenance is fast, and the shine and brilliance of glass mean you can enjoy your railing for a long time to come.
SADEV fastening systems are discreet and hold the glass in place without detracting from its transparent visual appearance. Aesthetics are maintained and glass is strong.
Glass offers exceptional design flexibility. Architects can play with the shape, color and texture of glass to create unique and expressive glass railings.
Iconic structures such as the Hippodrome de Paris Longchamps in France, designed by Dominique Perrault, demonstrate how glass can be used to create spectacular visual effects while blending harmoniously into the landscape. To achieve this, we proposed our SABCO glass railing solution, which provides an unobstructed 180-degree view of the track, offering a whole new experience for race fans.
This natural luminosity promotes the well-being of occupants.
Durability and longevity
Glass is a durable material that resists fading and corrosion. Glass is also infinitely recyclable. The glass industry actively recycles its materials, making it an environmentally-friendly choice.
When properly maintained, it can retain its beauty and functionality for decades. This means less construction waste and fewer resources consumed in replacement.
SADEV adopts an environmentally responsible approach to minimize its impact.
To this end, our wedges are made from 100% recycled ABS plastic (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). At the end of each wedge’s life cycle, it is possible to recover an recycle this material to make new products
Our packaging is now recyclable, reducing our plastic footprint. We have also opted to get closer to European suppliers, thus reducing our carbon footprint linked to transport.
